Notebooks 8 App Reviews

Still Great!

I was asked by Notebook to review the new version. I usually bypass those requests in order to get to work, but I really appreciate how well this app works, so I took time out to go to the App Store to write the review. I saw one that says its a "Crash Machine" and I was alarmed. Perhaps I hadnt really tried out v.8? So I went back to the app, wrote for 2 solid hours in a distraction free environment on my old iPad on which it seems like EVERYTHING has been crashing lately. But Notebook was solid as a rock. It is the same smooth, easy-to-use writing app that gets out of the way when you are writing and makes it easy to get your writing where you want it to go. Stores it in simple, clear ways so you can get back to it when you want to. Its a 5-star app in a 3-star world.

Upgraded version 100% worth the investment

I love it!

Tried all the rest and this one is the best!

Useful, but back up your data!

I use Notebooks for all my note-taking and information-collecting needs. There is no end to the amount of text, web pages, photos etc. that you can collect and organize. I like that my info is automatically backed up to my linked DropBox account, but BEWARE! If you dont back up your data to another site, NoteBooks can also DELETE files that you want to keep. And it will delete from ALL your devices AND your online backup if you dont have an independent copy on your computer. I have lost valuable data this way (I suspect it happened when I "upgraded" from an older version that was no longer supported) and it cannot be replaced. This goes for any app using cloud services! There is no substitute for an independent backup.

Best Notes App Yet!

I had a crash awhile back and contacted Notebooks about it, they gave me some instructions to try and I sent them a log note file and the next update resolved all my issues. This app gives me the flexibility I need for as much info I log daily. I highly recommend Notebooks.

Notebooks is pretty the gold standard in note taking producibility.

Before note apps or software as they were once referred to were popular, I have been using the Casios personal contact electronic devices as a makeshift note taking apparatus. You name, Ive used! No need to compare all the players. As a doctoral researcher, note taking, chronicling, and recording data is essential. Notebooks is the best note taking app on the market.

It simply works

Ive been using this app for a very long time. There have been bumps in the road, mostly having to do with new iOS versions. But now everything is stable — and fast. I use Dropbox syncing and it works flawlessly.

Great

This is an excellent app

If I could only have one app, this would be it!

This is an everything notebook done right. At no time are you locked into a proprietary system or data set. Notebooks is an elegant system with appropriate methods.

An excellent app

On my dock, and my #1 app, by far. I use it for notes and lists - so simple to use - open the app, tap ‘+’, and start typing to get a new item. Easy to move items between folders (books). There are features I don’t use, but they’re not in the way - the UI does a good job concentrating on the core functionality of note and list management. Overall very clean and natural to use. Notes are plain text files in Dropbox, which is handy for access from non-Apple platforms. Wishlist: - more colors for Books - an indicator on the top level book view showing pending sync - 3D Touch to create new item in favorite books (e.g. let me choose 3 to list in 3D Touch)

District Manager

Great application, love using it. Great on the road for briefing utilizing the PDF application. I use on IPHONE and IPAD.

Multifunction tool of apps

Does many, many things...well. Would recommend.

Great App

What really impressed me was how quickly the originator responded to my question and how they solved the problem

The closest thing to hog bay notebook 3.5

This app has an excellent balance of simplicity against sophistication, at least for my purposes. I use this in conjunction with the Mac app, with Dropbox syncing. Ive only lost data once over the past year, and it was triggered on the iOS side. Setting up the sync is straightforward. Youll be happiest using this app if you are comfortable working with a file hierarchy; however, searching by keyword and browsing by tag are robust and easily accessible in the ui.

Everything in one place. Remarkable

Creative writers are unique when it comes to how we use apps, Ive observed. We rarely work during specific hours or even at a specific location. Unlike a mathematician with a calculator for example, the app is not part of the process but merely a way to record the process. Only a few years ago standard formats were important (like Word or Final Draft, for example) but no more. Today almost any app can be used and as new ones are created and old ones evolve, people can and do, look for better solutions and try new writing apps. Also, unlike students and other careers where documents tend to pertain to specific projects, creative writers are constantly jotting down random story ideas and bits of dialogue on hold, waiting for a project. A problem for many but especially creative writers is that we end up with documents all over the place, in various word processors, audio recorders, clouds and hard drives. We even still scribble on napkins despite a device in every pocket (at least now we can scan the napkins to cloud). This is where Notebook comes in. Its the best app I have found for gathering everything in one location. Everything you write on your Mac, iPhone or iPad (no matter what app you used) can be accessed in one place. Brilliant!

Excellent hope spotlight search is coming

Excellent hope spotlight search is coming soon! Long time user and I love it.

Amazing App for Writers

The most important aspects of Notebooks are that it syncs via Dropbox and that it can render many types of files, not just Markdown. You can think of Notebooks as a new way of looking and interacting with your files. And if Notebooks has a limitation (e.g., opening Word docs), you can jump to Dropbox and interact with the same file there. Notebooks supports bucket-style writing in a BRILLIANT ways: - It allows you to create a custom order for your files that is independent of its name. - It also allows you to treat a file as if it is a task, so you can check it as started or complete. You can even set a due date for a file. - It allows you to color-code files. I highly recommend this app for the iPad Pro as it does things no other app currently does.

Great Notes App.

I use it exclusively as an all in one app.

Markdown, archive/search PDFs

I rely on this app as a digital replacement for my old hardcover work and personal notebooks. It supports markdown syntax so it is really easy to quickly type and format text. But it is much more than a simple note-taking app because it allows for inclusion of pictures, clickable URLs, tappable phone numbers and addresses, etc. - as well as files in a variety of formats including PDF. With the PDF reader (in-app purchase) you can search within PDFs. For example, I use the scanning app Scanbot and the handwriting app GoodNotes - both of which have OCR - to produce PDFs which I then store in the Notebooks app. That way I can view these media just as they appeared when I scanned them or wrote them AND search within the scanned or handwritten text. iPhone version syncs well with iPad and Mac versions of the app via DropBox (way quicker and more reliable than iCloud), thus allowing me access from all my devices. I deducted a star because the app searches titles and contents separately, and editing markdown files is a bit kludgy (when you tap on a document to edit it, you often end up in a different part of the document). But it is a great app, that I rely on every day to manage typed or handwritten notes and scanned documents.

Solid. Powerful. Learning Curve. Better than the alternatives

I have been using this app for 5 years along with its competitors, and now I am only using this one. Here is why: - It has a solid file structure that I can access on Dropbox from within the app, or from outside. - The storage structure is transparent and files are transportable. This cannot be said about either of the big competitors. - The Dropbox sync is flawless. Not true of one of the competitors. - I love the way it extracts tasks from my notes! I can always refer back to the note to remember the context. - All files -- PDFs, word, pages, excel, numbers, etc. -- are visible from within the app. What could improve? A more sophisticated search would be helpful. What it has works adequately.
